Sahastradhara : The Best Time to Visit and How to Get There

Sahastradhara

I have been to Sahastradhara several times in the past.  Whenever I am in Dehradun, I make it a point to visit this beautiful and charming place.  This February I happened to be in Dehradun and on the next day I went to explore Sahastradhara once again. Sahastradhara (सहस्त्रधारा) is a Hindi word which means “thousand springs”.  This majestic destination is one of the major attractions in Dehradun, Uttrakhand and is located at a distance of 18 km from the city centre.  This natural wonder is famous for its springs, waterfalls, caves with crystal clear water in there, besides a sulphur water spring that is believed to have healing properties. What I like about Sahastradhara is its  serene atmosphere, the river that flows between the town that has been converted into several swimming pools by small check dams.  This time I extra time to explore the several springs, waterfalls and caves.

Best Time to Visit Sahastradhara

I have visited Sahastradhara throughout the year. During winters this used to be our camping site for a week or so.  For tourists the best time to visit is from March to June and from September to December as during these months, the weather is pleasant, and the rainfall is low, making it an ideal tourist destination.  However, if you are looking to experience the magic of Sahastradhara in its full glory, try coming here during monsoon season, which lasts from July to August.  The rainwater cascading down the hills with waterfalls in full throttle and with the river and streams that comes to life, it all creates a surreal and breathtaking view.  While outdoor activities may be limited during monsoon, the natural beauty of Sahastradhara is at its peak during this time and it would be a delight for nature lovers and photographers.

Delhi to Dehradun

Getting to Sahastradhara and for that matter Dehradun is relatively easy.  I have come from Delhi to Dehradun by bus, train and my own car several times.  Earlier I had a Maruti Alto but now with TATA Nexon in my stables, I prefer driving from Delhi to Dehradun in my own car. There are however multiple modes of transport available to reach the destination.

By Air.   The nearest airport is Jolly Grant in Dehradun, which is about 27 km away from Dehradun and 35 km Sahastradhara. From the airport, you can take a taxi or a bus to reach your destination.

By Train.  The nearest railway station to Sahastradhara is the Dehradun Railway Station, which well-connected to major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and other major cities of India.  Once you reach the station, you can take a taxi or a bus to reach Sahastradhara.

By Road.  Sahastradhara is well-connected by road, and there are taxis and local bus services available that run frequently throughout the day. One thing I like about Dehradun city is the local bus service that connects virtually any place in Dehradun.  You can also drive to Dehradun and to Sahastradhara, the highways are in super excellent condition.
