I have been to Jammu innumerable number of times as I have a strong connection with this city. The reason being is that my better half is from this city. Over the years I have grown to like this city though much remains yet to be explored. Jammu, the historical city is located in the state of Jammu & Kashmir (right now UT). This beautiful city is filled with rich history and culture and has and great religious importance. Those going to Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine have to first come to Jammu and then pass proceed onwards to Katra and Vaishno Devi.

Delhi to Jammu Flight
Taking a flight from Delhi to Jammu is the quickest way to travel as the flight takes only around 1 hour and 15 minutes. However, the truth is it takes at least 5 to 6 hours to reach from destination to destination if we add the taxi journey, check in, security check and boarding etc. There are several flights available daily with GoAir, Vistara, Indigo and SpiceJet flying to Jammu, Srinagar and Leh, making it a convenient option for those who prefer to save time. The cost of a Delhi to Jammu flight can vary from Rs 4000 to 20000, depending on various factors like booking date, availability, cancellations etc.
Delhi to Jammu Train
This is the most preferred and more affordable option for those traveling from Delhi to Jammu. There are more than dozen trains running from Delhi to Jammu, with the journey time of around 12 hours, with Jammu Rajdhani taking only 9 hours. The Jammu Rajdhani -12425 ( New Delhi to Jammu Tawi ) leaves New Delhi at 20:40 and reaches Jammu at 05:45 the next day. The fare is around Rs 1200, 1700 and 2500 approx for AC 3, AC 2 and AC 1 respectively.
Delhi to Jammu Bus
Traveling by bus is another affordable and easy option. You can take State Transport Buses from ISBT Kashmiri Gate, New Delhi. However, I always prefer booking my bus tickets from Redbus app and the boarding point can be RK Ashram, New Delhi, Kashmiri Gate or Majnu Ka Tila. You can enter these details while booking the bus. The buses these days have become very comfortable with sleeper options wherein one can travel while sleeping on a sleeper like in the trains. The journey time is around 14 hours but in no time you are in Jammu.
History of Jammu
Jammu is one of the oldest cities in India having a rich history dating back to the ancient times. The city was founded by Raja Jambulochan, who ruled the entire region 3500 years ago (14th century BCE). Jammu has a rich and diverse history, with influences from various cultures and civilizations that have come and gone over the centuries. The city was an important center for trade and commerce during the Mughal Empire, with a thriving market for goods such as silk, spices and precious stones. During Dogra Kings rule Jammu served as the capital of the Hindu Kingdom of Jammu and Kashmir from 19th century to 1947. Jammu Tavi
Jammu is also known as Jammu Tavi as the city is located on the banks of the Tawi River. The Tawi river originates from the Shivalik Hills, flows for about 200 kilometers and ultimately joins the Chenab River. It is considered as one of the main sources of drinking water for the residents of Jammu city although the river has been dying slowly over the years. The Tawi River is surrounded by several ancient temples and religious shrines that hold great cultural and religious importance. The river is therefore not only the essential source of water for Jammu but also holds an important place in the history, culture, and religion of Jammu.
Weather in Jammu
Jammu has hot summers and cool winters. The summer months starts from April to June end and the temperatures ranging from 25 to 45°C and above. Then comes the monsoon season in Jammu which lasts from July to September, with moderate to heavy rainfall. The winter months start from October end till February with temperatures 5 to 15°C. During these months, Jammu experiences cool and clear weather, making it a great time to visit for those who enjoy cooler temperatures.

Mubarak Mandi Palace
Mubarak Mandi Palace is one of the most notable tourist attractions in Jammu Tavi. This historic palace complex served as the residence of the Dogra kings. The palace has a fascinating blend of Mughal and Rajasthani architecture. Today the palace has been converted as a museum and is open to visitors.
Bahu Fort
Bahu fort is located 5 km from the city centre, situated on a hill overlooking the Tawi River, it offers panoramic views of the city. It is considered the oldest fort in the city and was constructed originally by Raja Bahulochan about 3,000 years ago. The original fort was extended and improved upon by the Dogra Kings. Inside the fort there is a temple which is dedicated to the Hindu goddess Kali. Called Bawe Wali Mata temple it is considered on of the most important temple in the city.
Bagh-e-Bahu
Outside and around the fort there is an extensive terraced garden, known as Bagh-e-Bahu, which is quite popular with the locals and the tourists. This scenic garden is a popular picnic spot and offers fantastic views of the Tawi river and the Jammu skyline. The Bahu Fort, Bawe Wali Mata temple and Baghe-e-Bahu garden are all a must visit places in Jammu.
Raghunath Temple
Raghunath temple, dedicated to Lord Rama, is considered to be one of the most important temples in Jammu. It is known for its intricate carvings and beautiful architecture. Raghunath Temple was constructed by Maharaja Gulab Singh in the year 1835 but remained unfinished. Later his son Maharaja Ranbir Singh got it completed in the year 1860.
Peer Kho Cave Temple
Peer Kho temple is located in the heart of sity, along the banks of Tawi River just below the Mubarak Mandi ruins. Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is known for its natural rock formations and serene atmosphere. It is situated at an elevation for which a flight of stairs needs to be climbed. Once you reach the entrance, the descent through the caves commences. As you go through the winding cave it is an enthralling experience. The caves are right now locked and entrance may not be allowed.
Jammu Ropeway
One tourist attraction added recently (July 2021) is the 1.18 km Jammu ropeway starting from Peerkho to Mahamaya Temple. Now the locals and tourists can enjoy ropeway ride from Peer Kho to Mahamaya Temple is 1.184 km long, as it goes over the Tavi river giving the passengers a picturesque view of the river, temples and the surrounding areas.
Amar Mahal
Amar Mahal is a palace built by Maharaja Amar Singh, the Dogra king in the 19th century. He hired a French Architect and built the palace on the lines of a French Chateau. The palace was the last official residence of Maharaja Amar Singh’s son and the last king of the Dogra kingdom Maharaja Hari Singh. Maharaja Hari Singh’s son Maharaja Karan Singh donated the palace to Hari Tara Charitable Trust for use of it as a museum. Today the museum showcases the rich history and culture of Jammu, paintings, sculptures, manuscripts, and other artifacts. The museum exhibits among scores of items, the royal golden throne weighing 120kg, a Pahari Miniature Painting, Kangra Miniature Paintings, a library of 25,000 antique books and many rare art collections. There is also a large collection of portraits of the royal family right from Maharaja Gulab Singh, the first Maharaja till Hari Singh, the last Maharaja to sit on the throne.

Patnitop
Patnitop situated at a height of 6600 ft is located only 112 km from Jammu and is the nearest hill station. This popular hill station is known for its scenic beauty and adventure sports. It is a popular destination for trekking, skiing, and paragliding. Patnitop has India’s highest ropeway with over 65 meters ground clearance. It has a span of 849 meteres and there are 8 towers. This is an added attraction in Patnitop.
Sanasar
Sanasar is a small and a beautiful hill station located only at a distance of 20 km from Patnitop. This serene hill station is known for its stunning natural beauty and peaceful atmosphere. Sana and Sar are two small lakes though the water level in these two lakes in very less. A few hour walk from Sanasar is a 400 years old temple called Shank Pal temple, dedicated to Nag Shankh Pal. Sanasar is popular for adventure sports activities.
Bhaderwah
Bhaderwah is a picturesque hill station located only 70 km from Jammu. Surrounded by dense forests and rolling hills, Bhaderwah also known as “Chhota Kashmir” is known for its scenic beauty, colorful local fairs and unique culture. In winters the valley is covered in snow while in spring and summers it is ablaze with greenery and flowers all over the place.
Kud
Kud is a charming hill station located only 10 km from Patnitop and 112 km from Jammu. Located on the Udhampur Srinagar highway, surrounded by dense forests and rolling hills, Kud is a popular destination for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. The river Chenab flows through the Kud giving this place an enchanting look. Kud is also famous for a local sweet known as “Desi Ghee Patisa, a kind of sweet made up of milk products.
Banihal
Banihal located 200 km from Jammu is a scenic hill station located in Ramban District in the Pir Panjal range. It is near to Qazikund which is 35 km away. Interestingly, the distance between the two places on the new railway line is only 18 km. Banihal is the gateway to the valley of Kashmir. Banihal Pass situated at a height of 2832 m (9291 ft) separates Jammu and Kashmir. Banihal pass is accessible only during summers whereas in winters due to heavy snow the roads are closed for few days.

There are only 2 lakes which are very near to Jammu city. These are Mansar Lake and Surinsar Lake.
Mansar Lake
Mansar Lake is a serene and picturesque lake located 60 km from Jammu. It is known both for its religious significance and stunning natural beauty. It is 1.6 km in length and 0.80 km in width. Mansar lake is primarily fed by surface run-off and is an attractive habitat, breeding grounds for migratory birds. Besides being a popular tourist destination in Jammu, it is also a holy site that shares the sanctity of Lake Mansarovar. On the banks of this lake there is a shrine dedicated to Sheshnag. There are also are two ancient temples called Umapati Mahadev and Narsimha situated in the vicinity of the Mansar lake.
Surinsar Lake
Surinsar Lake is located 50 km from Jammu and is famous for its clear waters and peaceful atmosphere. Surrounded by hills and dense forests, the lake has some mythological importance. Mansar and Surinsar Lakes are considered twin lakes, as Mansar lake is located only 9 km away from it.
The Surinsar Mansar Wildlife Sanctuary is located between both the lakes. The entire region has abundant flora and fauna. There is a small island in the middle of the Surinsar lake which is home to thousands of bats. The lake has become quite popular with the local tourist of Jammu region.

Lohri
Lohri is a popular festival celebrated by the people of Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu Kashmir. Lohri 2023 was celebrated on January 14th and it marked the end of winter season. Lohri is celebrated with great zeal and enthusiasm, with people lighting bonfires, singing and dancing around it. On this joyous occasion, people distribute sweets especially groundnuts and revri while exchanging Happy Lohri Wishes and greetings with their loved ones. For the farmers the festival of Lohri holds great significance as it marks the end of the harvesting season and signifies a new beginning.
Baisakhi
Like Lohri, Baisakhi is also a festival celebrated in Himachal Pradesh, Jammu region and particularly Punjab. Baisakhi marks the beginning of the Punjabi New Year and the harvesting season. The festival is celebrated with much joy and fervour and celebrate the occasion with traditional dance and music. The festival holds great significance for Sikhs as it was on this day in 1699 when the 10th Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh ji founded the Khalsa Panth, the warrior community of Sikhs. Baisakhi is a time for rejoicing and spreading joy as families and friends come together to celebrate. Lohri also marks the start of the Hindu solar new year and the harvest season.
Navaratri
Navratri festival is celebrated over a period of nine days and nights The festival is dedicated to the worship of Durga Mata and her various forms. Navratri 2021 and Navratri 2022 were celebrated with great festivity, dance and dandiya. People are awaiting Navratri 2023 which falls on 22 March 2023. Though there are four Navratras in a only Chaitra Navratri (March) and Shardiya Navratra (Oct) see wide spread celebrations all over the country. Navratra is an occasion for people to do fasting for 9 days and celebrate the victory of good over evil. Wishing everyone a very Happy Navratri!

Diwali is a national festival celebrated all over India and is a major festival celebrated in Jammu as well. It marks the victory of good over evil and the triumph of light over darkness, characterized by fireworks, lamps, and distribution of sweets.

Eid ul Fitr is also a festival celebrated by Muslims not only in Jammu but all over India. It marks the end of Ramadan and the start of the new lunar month. There is much feasting, celebration, charity and prayers.
